U.S. calls for treaty on mercury reduction

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP)- In another reversal of a Bush administration policy, the U.S. is now pushing for a legally binding international treaty to reduce mercury in the environment.

At a meeting of the world's environment ministers in Kenya today, the Obama administration's top representative declared mercury "the most important global chemical issue" and said it "calls for immediate action." Advocacy groups are welcoming the U.S. policy change.

Using Twitter for Business and Travel

Yet another interesting use of Twitter. I wonder how many more uses people will think of for Twitter.

Travelers, businesses find a timely tool in Twitter

Hotel brands, airlines, airports, destinations and other travel companies are joining the growing Twitter community to not only have their voices heard, but to hear what their customers in the Twitter community are saying about them. The mobile nature of the technology makes it especially attractive to travelers.
Before road warriors and leisure travelers hit the road, more are turning to Twitter to scout their destination. Baltimore, Chicago and Philadelphia tourism officials are active users on the site and use it to offer tips from restaurants to shopping and everything in between.

  • GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) - Two Grand Rapids women are taking part in a social experiment called "Hope Heals." Throughout January, Karla Pankow and Amy Horton have been living on one dollar's worth of food.
The hope is that by sharing their experiences through twitter.com and their online blog, they can raise awareness about African countries like Zambia, where many people live off just one dollar of food each day. They're also hoping to raise money for a future mission trip to Zambia.

Advertising and Job Hunting on Twitter

I wonder if Twitter will keep it simple or try and "expand"/redesign to accommodate some of this ideas. Personally, I'd vote for keep it simple.

WASHINGTON (CNN) - Twitter , the social networking craze, has made its way to Capitol Hill in a big way.

"We now have a new public bulletin board," said Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-Missouri) .

"It goes to my 6,400 followers, who can then send it to their 100 or 1,000 or 2,000 followers, who send it to their 100 or 1,000 followers," said Rep. John Culberson (R-Texas) . "And it's geometric, Whoo! Just like this, immediately."

Missouri Democrat Senator Claire McCaskill and Texas Republican Congressmen John Culberson are two of an estimated 71 members of Congress that are twittering. They have two of the largest Twitter followings, posting in committee, from the House floor and on the way to preside over the Senate, even Twittering during our interview.

Surgeons send 'tweets' from operating room

DETROIT, Michigan (CNN) -- It's 7 a.m. at Henry Ford Hospital, and surgeons are preparing to remove a cancerous tumor from a man's kidney.

A doctor posts updates on social-networking site Twitter during a recent operation in Detroit.

It's potentially a risky surgery, but everything's ready: The doctors and nurses are in the operating room, the surgical instruments are sterilized and ready to go, and the chief resident is furiously Twittering on his laptop.

That's right -- last week, for the second known time, surgeons Twittered a surgery by using social-networking site Twitter to give short real-time updates about the procedure.

Negroponte Open Sources OLPC Hardware Design, Invites Copy-Cats

The embattled OLPC program, already reeling from job cuts and salary decreases, is making one final attempt to stay afloat: Open source everything and hope enough companies copy the design to make it profitable.

The news was delivered by OLPC frontman Nicholas Negroponte himself, during remarks at this week's TED 2009 conference.
